Sharing sad news from DGL Nunnery

Dear Friends,

We recognize some of you may have already received this news directly from Dongyu Gatsal Ling Nunnery in India, but in light of this very sad news we wish to share with all of you on our list.

Tsunma Thaye ChotsoThis week at Dongyu Gatsal Ling Nunnery, we faced a new milestone in our community with the death of one of our precious senior nuns, Tsunma Thaye Chotso. At aged 37, recently diagnosed with advanced Leukaemia, it had progressed too far to enable Thaye to respond to treatment.

Our nuns returned her body to our Nunnery, performed all the preparations and prayers with great dignity, respect, love and care for their dharma sister. They embodied Jetsunma’s advice to “respond to this first loss of a beloved community member with courage and a deepened understanding of dharma.”

While Tsunma Thaye did not live a long life, she led a very meaningful one and was a very dedicated and valued member of our Nunnery, offering service willingly and always with an open heart. Her funeral prayers were blessed with the presence of her root guru, His Eminence Khamtrul Rinpoche and many of the monks from Khampagar Monastery alongside our nuns. Many, many prayers were offered from around the world, reminding us of the preciousness of our worldwide community and how we are all interconnected.

Her family members were also comforted by the warmth of response received from all around since Thaye was genuinely loved by all who knew her. As Jetsunma observed, “With such blessings we are confident that her journey will be ever upward in the light of the Dharma.”

We have all learned a lot from her life and from her death and are deeply grateful for our connection with Thaye.

May we all remember impermanence; that our own death is certain, that the time of death is uncertain and that the only thing of value at the time of death is our dharma practice.
