Through their own voice, and without narration, the film explores the paradox of being a woman within traditional Tibetan Buddhism. These nuns are currently challenging thousands of years of history with the notion that a woman can be educated and that being born a female is not a punishment of past bad deeds. Throughout this film, we see strength, dedication and love as the connecting tissue between these women – their simple yet powerful stories contradict our desire to filter their voices through western conceptions of equality or feminism. Through their voices we come to understand that, though facing incredible hardship and discrimination, these women exemplify the best of both Buddhist principles and universal humanity.

Tea with Heather Kessinger, Director of In The Shadow of the Buddha

DGLI is happy to be hosting a tea at the Rubin Museum before the screening at 5pm for you to meet the filmmaker, Heather Kessinger.

Heather Kessinger created the film to tell the stories of the women of Tibetan Buddhism, and as counterpoint to the iconographic western representation of Buddhism with the image of a monk and his monastery. After years of travel and photography in the region, the time seemed right to create a film to truthfully and compassionately represent the women of this religion and culture.
